apple and blackberry

"So, I was schlepping around M&S looking for some some kind of cake, when I saw these monster cooking apples. Yes, I thought, great big apple pie for me,... then I saw the blackberries and my pie plan changed in an instant. But such a mean little punnet! You'd need two or three. This being M&S, the home of the £1.50 tray of cold mashed potato, I knew it was going to be out the question on my wages. So I spent the whole of the next day grubbing around the train tracks looking for blackberries, found loads and rustled up this pie with them.

It took:

• three Bramleys, simmered for 10 minutes to soften;
• a pound of blackberries mixed roughly with the apples
• and a couple of tablespoons of sugar for the filling.

For the pastry:

• 6oz plain flour and 6oz of self raising with 6oz of margarine.
• Its a big pie, so I gave it 50 minutes at gas mark 5.
• Best hot with some vanilla ice-cream."
